May 2009 News sheet

The Bulletin is one of the Club stars — but we will be looking for more material for next year. Make a note to write something of your experiences sailing this year, for the 2010 Bulletin. A short anecdote will be as welcome and a longer write up. So, please put pen to paper when you are sailing this summer.

Our thanks to Moyra for putting together a great edition of The Bulletin. Thanks for all the effort Moyra!

After a Club Get-together over the holiday weekend, it is proposed that members can disperse to do their own thing. Tony suggests that those who wish to meet in Yarmouth again on the Thursday ready to enjoy Old Gaffers Weekend. Please let Tony know if you hope to come.

BUT — don't forget to listen for Romeo Charlie Charlie on Ch77 09.30-10.00 on Sat 22nd for the latest info and the effect of the weather etc.

Club News.

Reeta is arranging a bar-b-que on Saturday 20th June. Because of differences with The Rempstone Estate, we cannot hold this on the beach at Long Island, Arne. It will be in the field close to Reeta and Dave's mooring, up river. (Dorset County Council are working at re-establishing public rights of way over Long Island and this option may be restored for 2010!. I have sent in evidence that we have been having club bar-b-ques at Long Island for at least 20 years and other clubs have done the same.) Please let Reeta know. Tony is arranging a meet-up and overnight stay on Poole Quay for drinks and a meal in Town, on Sat 18th July.

Let Tony know.

Don't forget, we hope to cruise West to Weymouth over the August Bank Holiday Weekend!

Details in August.

Other Club activities in June, July and August will be weekend get-togethers in The Harbour, arranged by calling Romeo Charlie Charlie on Ch 77 between 09.00 and 10.00 on the Saturday morning to see who is around and arrange a meeting place.

PYA/PHC News.

It is hoped to make the latest hydrographic report available soon. The new dredging protocol is still being discussed with DEFRA. The Admiralty Chart data for `diamond F' by Lake yard in Poole harbour, is regarded as accurate and it is hoped to have a chart available of the current racing marks soon.

The Harbour Master reports that last year safety was good in the harbour, but there were still some prosecutions for speeding and excess wash. Harbour Control will be more vigilant with Byelaw 2aa — regarding speeding - this season. A `no wash area' between Stakes Buoy and the bridge is likely to be introduced when the HRO's are approved.

There is optimism that a start will be made on the second bridge this Autumn. The bridge water traffic will be controlled by a new byelaw using traffic lights following the IALA system. Finances are still to be worked out and dredging of the area between the two bridges is likely to start this year.

The eel grass beds in Whitely Lake is to be marked with buoys as a sensitive area, not a `no go'. A similar area is being pushed for Studland — but consultation is likely to take place first. (Note. Seahorses in Studland are reported in the National Press as being a recent find — but evidence from fishermen and divers suggest they have been resident for many years).

The proposed HRO's are with the DoT and as the RYA are still in dispute, they are thought likely to remain on the desk for some time yet.

Proposed new ferry schedules could see ferries arriving at 12.15 and 12.45 causing congestion when the 12.30 bridge opens. This could mean changes to the bridge opening times in the future that will affect those mooring in Holes Bay.

Work on the Boscombe Artificial Surf Reef has just re-commenced and will continue until Sept. A safety zone will extend 300m but all mariners are asked to give a wide berth and keep a good lookout and careful navigation for associated traffic.

Hopefully, we will be off on our summer cruise after Old Gaffers Weekend, so the next NS will be in early August!! But, see you over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

Peter Stanaway.
